A bid to secure a government job through bribery has led to the imprisonment of three individuals after a Bahraini court found them guilty of offering money to a public employee in exchange for assistance in the recruitment process.
The First Lower Criminal Court sentenced all three defendants to two years in prison and imposed fines of BD1,400 each. The first defendant, an expatriate, will also be deported after serving his sentence.
The convictions were announced yesterday by the head of the Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution, who said the case stemmed from a report filed by a government employee who refused an attempted bribe and alerted authorities.
According to prosecutors, the Anti-Corruption Crimes Directorate received a complaint from the employee, who stated that the first defendant had approached him with an offer of money in exchange for using his position and influence to help secure a government job for the son of the second defendant.
The employee rejected the proposal and immediately reported the matter.
Investigators later found that the first and second defendants met the employee again and agreed to offer him BD1,400 in return for facilitating the appointment. The employee once more refused to accept the money.
Following the report, the Public Prosecution launched an investigation and authorised the recording of a meeting between the defendants and the public employee. Evidence gathered during the probe showed that the three defendants had offered the payment in exchange for assistance in obtaining a government position for one of their sons.
Prosecutors issued arrest warrants for the defendants who were confronted with the findings of the investigation.
The case was referred to court, which found them guilty.
