A 70-year-old Bahraini pensioner who survived a devastating fall that left him permanently paralysed has finally returned home from hospital, only to be forced to sleep on the floor because his family cannot afford the specialised medical equipment he urgently needs.
Abdulameer Abdulla Kadhem Abbas suffered catastrophic injuries after falling at his home, leaving him with a brain haemorrhage, fractured spine, severed spinal cord and multiple injuries.
While emergency surgery and months of rehabilitation helped stabilise his condition, he remains paralysed and reliant on others for every aspect of daily life.
The family exhausted its resources, selling household appliances and furniture to cover mounting medical expenses.

Although they managed to raise around BD3,000 for his ongoing rehabilitation, the funds were depleted before they could purchase essential equipment such as a medical bed, patient hoist and mobility aids.

Their plight has prompted renewed appeals for public support.
Northern Municipal Council member Abdulla Al Qobaisi, who has been spearheading efforts to assist the family, said the latest developments highlighted the urgent humanitarian need for help.

“Everyone was relieved when generous donors stepped forward to help continue his treatment,” Mr Al Qobaisi told the GDN.
“Unfortunately, the family simply could not raise enough money for the specialised equipment he needs at home. Today, this elderly man, who is paralysed from the waist down, is sleeping on the floor instead of a proper medical bed. It is a truly heart-breaking situation.”
Mr Al Qobaisi praised the donors who funded an accessible bedroom and bathroom modifications, as well as the support provided by the Hamad Town Social Charity Society, but stressed that much more assistance was still needed.
“This is no longer only about treatment,” he said.
“It is about restoring dignity to a father, grandfather and retired citizen who devoted his life to his family. A medical bed, wheelchair, patient hoist and other essential equipment will transform his daily life and ease the burden on those caring for him.”
His daughter, Hawraa Abbas, said bringing her father home was meant to be a moment of hope after months of treatment. “Instead, it has become another painful chapter for our family,” she added.
“We managed to secure funding for his rehabilitation because continuing treatment was essential. But when he came home, we had no medical bed waiting for him. Seeing my father, who spent months recovering in hospital, having to sleep on the floor is something no family should have to endure.”
She said her father remains remarkably resilient despite his condition.
“He never complains, but we know how uncomfortable and risky the situation is for him. Every day without the proper equipment increases the risk of pressure sores, complications and unnecessary suffering.”
A retired Bahraini and father of four, Mr Abbas now depends entirely on family members for his care, having once been the person his loved ones relied on most.
Despite the challenges, his family remains hopeful that the public will once again rally behind their appeal.
“We have seen incredible kindness from people we have never met,” Ms Abbas said.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has already helped us. We are now appealing for one final push so my father can live with comfort, dignity and hope. Every donation, no matter how small, brings us closer to giving him the quality of life he deserves after everything he has endured.”
