BASKETBALL – Bahrain’s senior men’s basketball national team are scheduled to depart for Doha today to take part in a three-nation friendly tournament alongside Saudi Arabia and hosts Qatar.
The three-day event is being organised by the Qatar Basketball Federation and it will be played from tomorrow to Saturday.
It will be part of the Bahrainis’ preparations for the first round of pre-qualifiers for the Fiba Asia Cup 2029, while both Saudi and Qatar are set to play in the ongoing second round of continental qualification for the Fiba Basketball World Cup 2027.
The Bahrainis will first face off with the home side Qataris in their opening assignment tomorrow.
They then take on their Saudi counterparts on Friday, before Qatar and Saudi lock horns in the tournament finale on Saturday.
All three contests are scheduled for 7pm tip-offs and they will be played at Doha’s Al Janoub Arena.
Bahrain’s senior men have been gearing up for both the friendly tournament and the pre-qualifiers with training under newly signed Greek-Slovenian head coach Slobodan Subotic, who will be making his debut on the sidelines with the national team at the Qatari capital.
Subotic will then guide the Bahrainis in the opening stage of Fiba Asia Cup 2029 pre-qualifiers in Dubai, the UAE, from Monday next week to September 1.
They will be going up against Oman, Nepal, Kuwait, and the home side Emiratis.
Subotic has had 18 call-ups for the coming period, including Mustafa Hussain, Ahmed Salman, Mohammed Buallay, Ahmed Bindayneh, Mohammed Juma’a, Ali Jaber, Mahmood Abbas Isa, Ali Hussain, Ahmed Alderazi, Emran Ashkanani, Abdulqader Thani, Hamad Faisal, Mohammed Ghazi, Ali Mohsen, Hassan Fahad, Nader Shaker, Muzamil Ameer Hamoda, and JaKarr Sampson, who joined the national team’s practices in the past days.
Aside from their Dubai foray, Bahrain are also getting ready to hit the hardwood in the men’s basketball tournament at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan next month.
