Hungarian authorities have arrested an intoxicated 24-year-old man who allegedly stole a light aircraft, breached a no-fly zone, and crash-landed near a nuclear power station.
The stolen aircraft triggered a military response after entering restricted airspace within two miles of Paks Nuclear Power Plant, the country's primary nuclear facility. Defence forces scrambled two Gripen fighter jets to intercept the plane shortly before it crash-landed in a sunflower field 6km from the site.
The suspect, who escaped the wreckage uninjured, subsequently attempted to carjack a passing motorist on a nearby road before police officers intervened.
Investigators believe the suspect took the aircraft without authorisation from nearby Kalocsa Airport.
While the nuclear facility suffered no damage, authorities have launched a nationwide security review across Hungarian airports to determine how the suspect gained access to the plane.
