Reusable cotton bags were recently distributed in Gudaibiya as part of a community initiative by the Rotary Club of Manama to encourage sustainable shopping habits.
Through its ‘Impact for Good’ initiative, the club has produced 5,000 reusable cotton grocery bags, which are being handed out to members of the public at the entrances of Al Jazira and LuLu supermarkets.
The campaign began in February.
By providing a practical alternative for everyday shopping, the initiative aims to help individuals and families reduce their reliance on single-use plastic bags.
The campaign comes as Bahrain continues to strengthen efforts to reduce plastic waste and encourage more environmentally responsible practices.
A ban on single-use plastic bags came into effect on August 20 under Decision No 7 of 2026, prohibiting the manufacture, import and use of plastic bags thinner than 57 microns.
The regulation is being implemented in co-ordination with the Supreme Council for Environment.
