A new law targeting insults against Islamic religious figures and symbols has been proposed by MPs, with repeat offenders facing up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to BD40,000, or both.
The proposal by five legislators is spearheaded by Parliament’s public utilities and environment affairs committee chairman MP Mohammed Al Bulooshi, and seeks to add a new Article 310 bis (One) to Bahrain’s 1976 Penal Code criminalising deliberate acts of contempt, insult, ridicule or offensive treatment targeting prophets, Ahl Al Bayt (Prophet Mohammed’s Family), the companions of Prophet Mohammed and his wives (The Mothers of Believers) .
