Bahrain has won two prestigious awards for promoting innovation in sustainable transportation system.
The kingdom was presented with the Sustainable Organisation Award and the Leading Woman in Mobility Award at the Gulf Green Mobility Forum 2026 at a ceremony in Salalah, Oman.
Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa received the Sustainable Organisation Award won by Khalifa Bin Salman Port from Dhofar Governor Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, in the presence of Oman’s Transportation and Telecommunications ports and maritime affairs under-secretary Bader Hood Al Mahmood.
Bahrain’s Land Transportation and Postal Affairs under-secretary Fatima Al Dhaen received the Leading Woman in Mobility Award.
Dr Shaikh Abdulla said the achievement reflects Bahrain’s efforts to develop a sustainable and innovative transport system, reduce emissions and improve resource and energy efficiency in support of the kingdom’s sustainability and carbon neutrality targets.
Khalifa Bin Salman Port received the award in recognition of its sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives, including a solar energy project using panels installed at port facilities to provide clean, renewable energy and improve operational efficiency.
Cargo flow, turnaround times and emissions performance have significantly improved at the port following the introduction of a new electric reach stacker, as reported by the GDN in July.
The new equipment, designed to keep cargo moving without interruption, strengthened day-to-day reliability and supported more predictable vessel and truck flows for port customers in Bahrain.
By replacing a traditional diesel unit, the electric reach stacker avoids up to 12,060kg of CO2 emissions each month, translating to more than 144 metric tonnes annually.
This contributes to lower supply chain emissions for customers while maintaining high operational performance.
Ms Al Dhaen was recognised for her contributions to sustainable land transport, institutional governance and sustainability, innovation, national talent and youth development, and women’s participation in the transport and logistics sector.
Dr Shaikh Abdulla also took part in the second edition of the forum which discussed policies and initiatives related to sustainable transport, as well as means to enhance co-ordination and exchange best practices among GCC countries in this domain.
The transportation minister underscored the importance of further enhancing GCC integration in sustainable transport and green mobility to support GCC countries’ sustainability and carbon neutrality targets.
He also highlighted leveraging innovation and modern technologies to support the transition towards more sustainable modes of transport.
These efforts would create broader opportunities for public-private partnerships, he said.
