We live in a world where a screen is often the first thing we look at in the morning and the last thing we see before going to sleep. With a simple swipe, we can enter someone else’s world, see their achievements, celebrations, friendships, travels, perfect photographs and seemingly perfect lives.
But behind every post is a person, and behind every screen is a story we may never know.
As students, it is easy to look at someone else’s life online and wonder, “Why don’t I have what they have?” We see the good moments but rarely see the struggles behind them. We see the achievement but not the countless failures that came before it. We see the smile in the photograph but not the difficult day that may have happened moments earlier.
Social media can quietly turn life into a competition – who looks better, who has more followers, who gets more likes, who has achieved more, who went somewhere exciting, or who seems happier? But life was never meant to be measured in likes, comments, or followers.
Your real life cannot be compared with someone else’s edited moments.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying social media. Technology can connect us, inspire us and give us opportunities to learn and create. The problem begins when we start using someone else’s highlight reel to judge our own ordinary days.
So, dear students, remember to look up from the screen sometimes.
Talk to the person sitting beside you. Laugh with your friends. Spend time with your family. Make mistakes without worrying about how they look online. Celebrate small achievements that nobody else sees. Be proud of the progress that may never receive a single ‘like’.
Most importantly, don’t lose yourself while trying to create a version of yourself that others will approve of.
You are more than your profile picture. You are more than your followers. You are more than your grades, achievements, or online presence.
There is a real person behind the screen and that person deserves to be known, valued and loved for who they truly are.
So, before you scroll through someone else’s life and wonder why yours isn’t the same, pause for a moment.
Put the phone down. Look around. Your own story is happening right now.
