A 19-year-old male has been arrested for allegedly luring and blackmailing a 14-year-old girl through a social media platform, Bahrain’s Interior Ministry has revealed.
The arrest was made by the Child Protection Unit in Cyberspace, operating under the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption, Economic and Electronic Security.
The ministry said the unit sprang into action after receiving a report about the case, launching search and investigation procedures and gathering information and evidence.
These efforts led investigators to identify and arrest the suspect.
Legal procedures have since been taken in preparation for referring the case to the Public Prosecution.
The case has also prompted a renewed warning from authorities over the dangers children can face while using social media, particularly when approached by strangers using deception or enticement.
The Child Protection Unit urged parents to keep a close eye on their children's online activity and speak to them about the risks of communicating with unknown people online.
Parents were also advised to ensure children do not share photographs, personal details or other private information with strangers.
The unit stressed the importance of reporting any suspicious communication or attempts to lure children at the earliest opportunity.
