An historic park in Muharraq has reopened to the public following significant renovation works worth BD617,000, including the planting of more than 470 trees and the installation of a multi-purpose sports court and a walking path.
Casino Park, which covers more than 23,000 square metres, has undergone redevelopment works since mid-2023 after the Muharraq Municipal Council formally submitted a proposal to the Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry to completely restore the park to its original glory.
These works form part of the implementation of directives by His Majesty King Hamad and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to safeguard the historical and cultural identity of Bahrain’s buildings and cities, revive Isa Al Kabeer Palace, and develop Muharraq while preserving its historical and cultural identity.
The revamped park was inaugurated by Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak, at an event attended by Muharraq Governor Salman Bin Hindi, ministry under-secretary for municipalities affairs Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa and under-secretary for agriculture and animal wealth Asim Abdulla.
Other notable attendees included deputy governor Major General Jassim Al Ghatam, Muharraq Municipal Council chairman Abdulaziz Al Naar, municipality director-general Khalid Al Qallaf and area representative Dalal Al Maqahwi.
Mr Al Mubarak said that the reopening of Casino Park represents a valuable addition to Muharraq’s recreational facilities.
“Given its strategic location in the heart of the city and its proximity to residential neighbourhoods and commercial outlets, the park, with its historical significance as one of Muharraq’s oldest gardens, holds a special place in the hearts of residents and visitors.
“The project reflects the ministry’s commitment to developing parks and public facilities and providing a comprehensive recreational environment by expanding green spaces, modernising amenities and providing dedicated areas for walking and sporting activities.
“These improvements will contribute to enhancing the urban environment and providing residents and families with an inviting space for leisure.”
He also commended the efforts of the engineering and technical teams that contributed to the project’s implementation.
Formerly known as Casino Garden, the park was established in the late 1960s, originally serving as a recreational spot for the British Royal Air Force before becoming a beloved community green space.
Before the redevelopment, the park suffered repeated vandalism, sabotage and damage, which affected its facilities and usability.
Works included the development of facilities and the modernisation of features in line with the requirements of the Muharraq Development Project.
The 23,158sqm park includes the installation of modern, safe play equipment with rubber flooring and the construction of a multi-purpose sports court and security cameras.
Walking trails and pathways were also developed, improvements were made to lighting and landscaping, and a dedicated warm-up area for exercise was provided alongside a service building, public amenities and car parking.
Around 480 trees have been planted for shade, alongside almost 11,451sqm of vegetation, meaning the park now has 536 trees, with an automatic irrigation system.
Meanwhile, Mr Bin Hindi affirmed that the reopening of Casino Park reflects Bahrain’s commitment to the continued development of its cities and urban environments, with people placed at the heart of the planning and development process.
“This approach supports the kingdom’s comprehensive development journey under the leadership of His Majesty and HRH Prince Salman,” he said.
“The garden’s redevelopment and reopening represent an addition to Muharraq’s public amenities.
“It is important to continue implementing projects that meet residents’ needs, improve services and enhance the city’s appeal.”
Mr Al Naar said that the reopening of the park represents a significant enhancement of the city’s public amenities.
“The park provides green spaces and recreational and sporting facilities for residents and families.
“The redevelopment encourages residents to make greater use of open spaces.”
He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to working with the ministry and monitoring projects that meet citizens’ needs and contribute to Muharraq’s development.”
