Bahrain and other GCC countries could help expand a cross-regional defence framework focused on protecting undersea cables which carry most of global Internet and data traffic, energy cables, as well as oil and gas pipelines.Speaking during the fifth plenary session of the IISS Manama Dialogue, titled ‘Maritime Security at an Inflection Point’, Singaporean Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs and Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad highlighted the importance of securing critical underwater infrastructure and the ‘Guiding Principles on Underwater Infrastructure Defence Exchanges’ (GUIDE) initiative, launched in May this year .
