The GCC states underscored the need to strengthen the role of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in addressing the use of the veto and promoting transparency and accountability, in support of efforts to reform the Security Council and enhance its ability to maintain international peace and security.
This was stated by Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, in a statement delivered on behalf of the GCC states during a General Assembly meeting on the use of the veto, held as part of the Assembly’s 81st session.
The statement noted that the adoption of General Assembly Resolution 76/262 in 2022 marked an important step towards strengthening the Assembly’s role in addressing the use of the veto.
It further stressed that the Iranian attacks targeting GCC states challenge international decisions and the principles of the UN Charter, highlighting the need for a firm and responsible international stance to prevent such attacks.
It also noted that the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2817 reflects the importance of the council fulfilling its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security.
The statement further highlighted that the failure to adopt the draft resolution on the security of waterways and freedom of international navigation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, following the exercise of the veto, underscores the need to strengthen dialogue and bridge differences among states to address regional and international issues in a spirit of shared responsibility.
