A BRIGHT object seen falling from the sky over Bahrain last night was a satellite debris, according to an expert.
Australian resident Mathew Warnest, who took a one-minute-41-seconds video of the incident and sent it to the GDN, thought it was a meteor.
However, Bahrain Astronomical Society chairman Dr Waheeb Al Nasser said the object was a piece of the Russian satellite, Zeus, which had entered the earth's atmosphere at "high speed".
"Due to high air pressure on the surface of the satellites, which causes friction, the air becomes very hot and gets molten."
This causes the object to heat up so much that it glows.
The occurrence was predicted last month by the International Astronomical Society in Abu Dhabi as well as scientists in the US, said Prof Al Nasser. Mr Warnest, a Bahrain government employee for the past five years, spotted the falling object from his terrace in Um Al Hassam.
"It was around 6.26pm and I thought the bright object was a meteor," he told the GDN.
"I had enough time to grab my camera and film a video."
