BAHRAIN is ranked sixth in the top 15 most Internet-connected countries, according to a price comparison website.
The report, by Compare The Market, also showed that 98 per cent of Bahrain’s population is connected to the digital world.
The factors used to rank the most Internet-connected countries were the number of free Wi-Fi spots, mobile cellular subscriptions per 100 and individuals using the Internet.
According to the report, published by the Global Banking and Finance Review, Americans are the most Internet-obsessed nation with 76pc of the population using Internet regularly, 1.23 mobile subscriptions per person and 515,925 free Wi-Fi locations.
Bahrain has only 4,034 free Wi-Fi spots but it boasts 2.1 mobile subscriptions per person, higher than Russia at 1.59, Saudi Arabia at 1.49, the UK at 1.2 and Brazil at 1.18.
According to the report, Brazil took second place with the highest number of free Wi-Fi locations at 559,490 in total, which is almost 40,000 more than the US, but only 61pc of the population is connected to the Internet.
The GDN quoted Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA) chief executive Mohamed Al Qaed as revealing in May that 98pc of Bahrain’s population are active Internet users with a mobile penetration of about 184pc.
