A TOTAL of 2,863 employees working in 18 private companies have not received their wages, with some of the salaries pending for six months.
This was revealed by Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan, who said six of the firms did not pay their employees for two months, four others had three months worth of overdue wages and another four companies were four months behind schedule, while three companies did not pay their staff for five months and one for six months.
He told parliament in writing that his teams were following up with the private sector companies to ensure they paid their employees – adding that some of the firms have started partially paying their staff.
He also pledged to take legal action against any company that continued to fail to meet its financial commitments towards its employees.
Payments
“We will follow up with companies that don’t pay the wages of their employees and should they fail or refuse to make payments then we will refer the cases to the Public Prosecution if we reach a dead end with negotiations, deadlines and administrative procedures,” said Mr Humaidan.
“There are 2,863 private sector employees who haven’t received their wages, working in 18 companies, and we have managed to get partial payments from some, but more is being done to ensure that full payments are made.
“There are 87,000 companies listed in Bahrain and 18 violators isn’t a huge number, but that doesn’t mean we disregard the seriousness of these cases, and therefore we will work towards ending it through an understanding between the companies and their employees.”
His response, which will be discussed at Tuesday’s weekly parliament session, were attached to documents containing this week’s agenda that were released to the media yesterday.
