BAHRAIN last night claimed its second medal at the World Athletics Championship in Doha with the 4x400 mixed relay team winning a bronze behind the US and Jamaica.
The Bahrain team, consisting of Musa Isah, Aminat Jamal, Salwa Eid Nasser and Abbas Abubaker Abbas, finished in a personal record time of 3:11.82 minutes.
The event was won by the US in a world record time of 3:09.34 and Jamaica finished second in 3:11.78.
It was Bahrain’s second medal following Rose Chemilo’s silver in the women’s marathon on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce powered her way to 100 metres gold to become the first person to win four gold medals over the distance in this competition.
Fraser-Pryce, who only returned to the track in earnest last year after giving birth to a son, capped a dominating championship storming across the line in a season best time of 10.71 followed by Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith in 10.83.
The Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou, world silver medallist at 100m and 200m in London two years ago, completed the podium grabbing bronze with a clocking of 10.90.
Russian athlete Anzhelika Sidorova, competing as a neutral because of her country’s ban from athletics, soared to the women’s world pole vault title with the best leap of the year.
Sidorova pipped Sandi Morris by vaulting 4.95 metres with her third and final attempt, leaving the American with a silver medal for her third successive major championship after clearing 4.90.
Greek Ekaterini Stefanidi, the title-holder and Olympic champion, finished with the bronze.
Earlier, Japan’s Yusuke Suzuki won the 50 kilometres race walk while 43-year-old Joao Vieira defied conditions he described as “hell” to become the oldest man to win a medal in any event.
The Portuguese veteran, taking part in his eleventh world championship, finished second to add to the bronze medal that he won in Moscow in 2013, while Canada’s Evan Dunfee was third.
The race began at 11.30pm to avoid the worst of the Doha heat but conditions were still stifling with high humidity.
