Manama: A new system for electronic monitoring of prisoners is being studied to replace some jail sentences. Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowment Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa said during parliament's weekly session that the government was studying a proposal to replace such punishments in an attempt to avoid isolating offenders from the community.
"Judges will determine the suitable punishment and if replacement punishments can be implemented on individual cases," he said on Tuesday. "We can't have people in jail for 10 years and then ask them to integrate into society when they can't.
"But those who will be allowed to serve punishments outside prison should not be dangerous and that is a decision that will be left to the judge." Shaikh Khalid said several options were also being looked into as replacement punishment.
"For electronic braces, they will be programmed to ban those wearing them from certain places while knowing their locations," he added.
