Manama: Green technologies will play an important part in the expansion of Bahrain International Airport as it seeks to be the second airport in the Gulf to receive an international environmental certification.
The new passenger terminal building will feature solar panels and latest technologies in energy and water efficiency.
“Renewable energy will account for one to two per cent of the total power generation capacity featuring energy-efficient products such as solar panels,” said TAV Saudi Arabia and Africa deputy managing director Cumhur Kaur.
TAV Construction from Turkey was awarded the main contract earlier this year, along with UAE’s Arabtec, to construct the new facility, services building and an aircraft bay.
Mr Kaur said the new passenger terminal building will feature materials similar to the ones used in the
construction of Saudi’s Madinat Airport.
“Light-colour roofs to make the most of natural lighting will be used with ozone-friendly air-conditioning and ventilation systems.
“We are looking to use new technology with friendly maintenance for this project.”
In addition, he said the use of regional content in the construction of the facility will be encouraged to boost local businesses.
Mr Kaur said a proper energy management system will be in place when the new facility is operational by 2019.
The new Saudi airport, which opened last year, is the first airport outside the US to receive the popular green building certification LEED Gold Specification.
“We are now working to get the certification for Bahrain when the project is completed by the middle of 2019,” said Mr Kaur.
He was speaking during his address at the second annual Bahrain International Airport Development Forum, that opened yesterday at Movenpick Hotel, Bahrain.
