Bahrain’s league champions Al Hidd are set to face Altyn Asyr FK of Turkmenistan in the last match of the group stages of the Asian Confederation Cup today at 4pm at the Kopetdag Stadium in Ashgabat.
Only the two top teams in each of the eight groups will qualify to the knockout round.
Al Hidd currently sit in fourth place with four points from five games having tied with Altyn Asyr FK 1-1 in Bahrain and defeated Jordan’s Al Wehdat 6-2, also in Bahrain.
However, they fell to defeat 0-2 against Al Wehdat in the first round and also suffered two back to back defeats against Lebanese side Al Ahd, 5-2 in Bahrain and 1-0 in Lebanon.
Al Ahd currently top the group and have already guaranteed qualification to the next round with 12 points from their five group games.
Al Tyn Asyr FK come in second place with six points from five games while Al Wehdat come in third with five points from five games.
The second qualification spot is up for grabs however. Al Hidd will find it difficult as other than winning their match, they would have to wait for the result of the match between Al Ahd and Al Wehdat which takes place in Jordan at the same time.
The first match between the two sides saw Al Ahd score a 88th minute penalty to grab the three points to themselves after the result was 2-2.
Al Hidd were recently crowned Bahrain’s first division league champions with a game to go for the first time in history.
