A PLANE passenger jailed for 15 years for trying to smuggle narcotics worth more than BD50,000 inside a book, electronic items and packets of sweets has lost his final appeal.
The 28-year-old Pakistani man who was found guilty of attempt to smuggle hashish and crystal meth, locally known as shabu, was also fined BD5,000 by the High Criminal Court in December.
He then lodged an appeal at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court, which was rejected in February. A final appeal at the Cassation Court has also now been rejected.
“The defendant was arrested at Bahrain International Airport on August 16, 2019, in possession of narcotics,” read the Cassation Court ruling.
“He hid hashish in an iPhone and an iPad container and shabu in earphones, a book and sweet packet. He was found guilty due to sufficient evidence against him.
“Despite hiding the drugs in a professional way, authorities uncovered the narcotics and arrested him red-handed.”
He was arrested carrying half a kilo of hashish, 60 Ecstasy pills, prescription drugs and 200gm of shabu after being intercepted by customs officers.
The defendant earlier told prosecutors he tried to smuggle the drugs into the country after buying it from a friend. The man will be deported after completing his sentence.
