Bahrain Elite Swimming Team’s Omar Al Malki yesterday won the 18-30 years category gold medal in a swimming competition which was part of the 2016 Olympic Day festivities.
The Bahrain national team skipper, who scored 1,732 points, beat another prominent Bahraini swimmer Khalid Baba (1,454), who secured the silver.
Abdulla Abu Al Shabab (1,163), representing the Bahrain triathlon team, was third.
The event, organised by Bahrain Olympic Committee in cooperation with Southern Governorate at the Bahrain Swimming Association premises at Khalifa Sports City in Isa Town, also featured 10 other categories for boys and girls.
Oleg Rukhlevich of Bahrain Elite Swimming Team won the men’s 31-and-above event scoring 1,223 points. Michael Raymond (Bahrain Triathlon, 788) and Mohammed Al Dosiri (Bahrain Triathlon, 529) were second and third, respectively.
In the girls section, Fatema Al Mahmeed of Bahrain Elite Swimming Team won the 15-17 years category title with 1,001 points while teammate Swathi Swathi (204) was the runner-up.
In the 13-14 category, Rataj Razi of Bahrain Swimming Team topped with 783 points. Behind him were Bahrain Elite Swimming Team members Adhya Rakesh (134) and Shreya Shaji (124), who respectively bagged the silver and bronze medals.
Bahrain Swimming Association president Shaikh Mohammed bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and high ranking Bahrain Olympic Committee representatives honoured the top three swimmers in each race.
This year’s Olympic Day got underway on May 14 with the Northern Governorate hosting the inaugural race as well as other competitions and entertaining activities for the community at Budaiya Coast.
The Capital Governorate organised the second race on May 17 in Tubli.
The next event will be held by Muharraq Governorate on Tuesday while the fifth and concluding race is scheduled for Friday at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir.
