A HIGHLY-SKILLED team at the Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) performed life-saving brain surgery on a man with a severe head trauma with a stick of wood lodged within his brain.
The 40-year-old male patient was brought into the hospital with a penetrating head injury after being assaulted in his car, it has emerged.
The patient was reportedly approached by a man who assaulted him causing a deep penetrating brain injury with a sharp stick, said a statement by the SMC yesterday.
“The patient was stabilised in the emergency department and he underwent neuro-imaging to help decide on the size and site of the craniotomy and the route of extraction of the foreign body,” the statement added.
“CT brain imaging revealed the wooden foreign object had penetrated five centimetres deep within the brain.
“This led to brain laceration, contusion and bleeding.”
A four-hour mini-craniotomy was performed by neurosurgeons, led by consultant Dr Joseph Ravindran and assisted by Dr Mohammed Jawad and Dr Mena Mikhail.
“The wooden foreign body was removed through a mini-craniotomy – an opening in the skull with a diameter limited to three to four cm,” said Dr Ravindran.
“This allowed minimal manipulation of the foreign body, ensuring that it leaves through the same track it entered without causing further damage.”
Due to the efforts of the multi-disciplinary team, the patient was discharged with post-operative follow-up revealing complete recovery and no associated complications after undergoing intensive neuro-rehabilitation.
“SMC continues to provide optimum care, ensuring citizens’ and residents’ rights to receive the best health services,” said Government Hospitals chief executive Dr Ahmed Al Ansari.
“We will continue to provide and strive for the development of our surgical services according to the capabilities made available to us.”
