A MAN jailed for three years for breaking Covid-19 home quarantine rules has had his sentence reduced to three months on appeal.
The 34-year-old Indian electrician was arrested after a video of him outside a restaurant in Manama was widely shared on social media.
He was seen wearing an electronic bracelet given to Covid-19 patients under home quarantine.
Defence lawyer Bushra Mayoof told the GDN that her client was found guilty by the Lower Criminal Court and fined BD5,000.
However, the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court yesterday scrapped the fine and reduced the jail term.
“We filed an appeal and a judgement was issued modifying the sentence from three years’ imprisonment to three months, with deportation.
“The penalty was scrapped.”
The GDN previously reported that Hussain Ahmed, from Bihar, India, had sent a letter to Indian External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmaniam Jaishanker, claiming that his brother Mohammed Khaled was innocent and had stepped out of his accommodation only to get food when he was arrested.
Mr Ahmed, in his letter, said his younger brother had been working in Bahrain for the last eight years and was asked to quarantine at home for 15 days after he tested positive for Covid-19 on May 18.
