SHIPPING containers, abandoned trucks and leftover metal scrap material were removed from the Southern Governorate as part of a massive clean-up campaign.
The drive, organised by the Southern Municipality, was aimed at removing large objects obstructing public roads and inner roads within residential areas.
Heavy machinery, shipping containers and abandoned scrap vehicles were cleared from Al Hajiyat and Nuwaidrat as they were considered violations under the 1996 Operation of Public Roads Law.
“Large objects occupying public roads removed from Nuwaidrat and Al Hajiyat include heavy equipment, marine machinery, shipping containers, abandoned scrap vehicles in addition to small cranes,” said the Southern Municipality in a statement.
“Heavy-duty trucks and six-wheel trucks along with workers were deployed to carry out the removal work.
“The municipality also removed around 10 truckloads of construction waste from empty plots of land in Wadi Al Sail.
“Advanced equipment and machinery were used to remove the dumped construction waste.”
Meanwhile, around 940 tonnes of used furniture were removed from 316 homes by the Southern Municipality from the governorate from June 2020 until August 31 this year.
The free municipal service, held in collaboration with the Southern Municipal Council and waste management company Urbaser Bahrain, was launched in June last year to dismantle and move old furniture from homes.
The GDN previously reported that the scheme comes amid increased incidents of furniture being dumped on the streets or improperly disposed of in open spaces.
