MANAMA: A man is on trial for allegedly stealing BD2,000 from his friend’s home after forging a court document.
The 30-year-old Bangladeshi appeared at the High Criminal Court yesterday where he denied theft and forgery.
He has been accused of stealing the amount from a fellow national after the latter was apprehended in connection with a kidnap case.
The victim earlier told the Public Prosecution that the defendant had betrayed his trust.
“I did not expect this from my best friend,” the 36-year-old said in his statement to prosecutors.
“I was arrested in connection with a kidnap case. I was desperate and rang him up (the defendant) for help.”
The victim said the defendant tricked him into believing that he had received a BD2,000 fine.
“He told me that I had been fined a huge amount,” the victim said.
“I asked him to collect the money from my house.
“However, I later found out that I had not been fined at all.
“He cheated me and forged a document to justify his claim.
“I was released from custody a couple of weeks later when authorities found out that I had nothing to do with the kidnap.
“I tried to contact my best friend (victim) but he refused to take my phone calls after I found out about the scam.”
The defendant denied the charges.
“My friend (victim) phoned me when he was arrested,” he told prosecutors.
“He wanted some of his belongings and I collected them from his home.
“He also told me to take some money after I informed him about a fine against him.
“I did not pocket the money, I only used it to pay the fine and lawyer’s fee.”
The trial has been adjourned until Sunday for review.
