One of two cousins on trial for alleged drug dealing said he thought his cousin was selling coffee and not hashish.
The Saudi nationals, aged 24 and 26, appeared at the High Criminal Court where they denied smuggling drugs via King Fahad Causeway in August.
According to court documents, the cousins used their vehicle’s air filter to smuggle narcotics.
They were arrested on August 14 near a shopping mall in Manama after they agreed to sell BD800 worth of the drug to a plainclothes officer.
However, the 24-year-old claimed that his co-defendant was smuggling drugs without his knowledge.
“I honestly thought it was coffee,” he said in his statement to prosecutors.
“My cousin (co-defendant aged 26) told me to take a bag from the air filter and give it to a man. It smelled like coffee.
“I did not know it was hashish and was shocked when we were arrested.
“I just came to Bahrain to go to Dragon City and Amwaj.”
A detective said he received information about the defendants smuggling narcotics into the country.
“We set up a sting operation and one of the defendants, aged 26, agreed to sell drugs to an undercover agent,” the 40-year-old told the court.
“They were caught red-handed.”
The trial has been adjourned until October 19 for review.
