A Bangladeshi man who was sentenced in absentia for kidnapping and human trafficking was arrested when he objected to his sentence, it has emerged, writes Reem Al Daaysi.
The 31-year-old was put on trial at the High Criminal Court for abducting an Indonesian housemaid, holding her captive in his apartment in Gudaibiya and forcing her into prostitution. His 38-year-old victim was held captive for 11 days before being rescued by police.
Court documents revealed that the man was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years behind bars in addition to a BD2,000 fine. He was sentenced in absentia as he was still at large when the trial took place. The verdict was issued on July 18 this year.
Upon objecting to his sentence at a police station he was arrested and will now appear in court on November 28 after filing the objection yesterday.
He will remain in custody until his trial date.
