The Kuwaiti Education Ministry has launched the first phase of a major workforce restructuring, terminating the contracts of 7,019 expatriate teachers to tackle an estimated surplus of 33,268 staff across various specialisations.
The decision aims to align school staffing levels with actual requirements and is expected to reduce annual salary expenditure by KD42 million (approx. BD 51.5 million).
The plan forms part of a wider effort to expand Kuwaitisation in the education sector. Officials emphasised that the dismissals are based on length of service rather than random selection, adding that recruitment will continue in subjects where shortages persist.
