A WOMAN who told a court she wanted more freedom before stealing her husband’s vehicle and fleeing to Saudi Arabia has been jailed for six months.
The 35-year-old Saudi has been found guilty of forgery and theft by the Lower Criminal Court.
Lawyer Lulwa Al Kaabi filed the case on behalf of the woman’s 40-year-old Bahraini victim. The couple has since divorced.
She said that the woman fled Bahrain in January via King Fahad Causeway, claiming her spouse did not provide her with sufficient ‘freedom’.
The defendant was found guilty of the charges due to sufficient evidence. “The woman received a six months’ sentence in connection with the charges,” read the court ruling. “She admitted to the charges but pleaded with judges to pardon her.”
The couple was married at the time of the offence. He divorced her when he found out she had left him to go across the causeway.
The lawyer described how the defendant drove his Hyundai Sonata, leaving their two sons, aged four and six, behind – before returning to Bahrain months later and filing a case at the Sunni Sharia Court requesting custody of the children.
“My client was married to the Saudi woman for seven years,” she told the GDN. “She claimed that she did not get enough freedom and ended up taking his vehicle in January.
“She forged a paper with my client’s signature saying that he was allowing her to drive his vehicle to Saudi Arabia. She did not say that he mistreated her but only that he did not give her enough freedom.”
She said that her client had suffered great psychological trauma. “She took his car and stayed in Saudi for six months,” the lawyer added. “She then returned to Bahrain and filed a case requesting custody of her children. This has caused great psychological trauma to my client.
“She stole his vehicle and forged his signature to be able to travel to Saudi Arabia.”
