PASSENGERS arriving at Bahrain International Airport will no longer have to take a PCR test for Covid-19 to enter the country, with effect from Sunday.
Precautionary quarantine for all arrivals has also been cancelled.
The Civil Aviation Affairs last night announced that the decision has been taken based on recommendations of the National Taskforce to Combat the Coronavirus, which have been approved by the Government Executive Committee.
Protocols for contacts of Covid-positive cases were also updated last night. Precautionary isolation has been cancelled for all contacts of existing cases, including those who do not hold the green shield on BeAware App. The move will also come into effect from Sunday.
According to the new rules, tests will be done only for contacts who experience Covid symptoms. They can conduct a rapid test and if the result is positive, go directly to one of the drive-through testing centres for a PCR. They can also opt for a PCR at a private hospital, call 444, or book an appointment through the BeAware App.
The task force said the decisions have been taken after national indicators revealed the effectiveness of vaccination and booster shots in increasing the body’s immunity. However, citizens and residents have been urged to adhere to precautionary measures to preserve the health and safety of all.
A top health official earlier said nine brands of Covid-19 rapid antigen kits will soon be available in Bahrain to cater for a growing demand and rush for the product in the market.
Pharmacies have been overwhelmed by customers requesting kits as the Omicron variant had caused a spike in cases in recent weeks.
Large shipments are expected to arrive in Bahrain in the coming days, National Health Regulatory Authority chief executive Dr Mariam Al Jalahma said in statement.
The authority has accredited seven brands while two others will be approved once efficacy results are available.
