A stray dog from Bahrain that found a new home in the UK last year has won the hearts of judges and visitors at a popular contest in Britain.
The three-year-old male Saluki came first in the event and won awards for being the ‘purest breed’ and ‘best-looking dog’.
The stray was adopted by a Saluki lover in Britain after it was rescued by the Animal and Environment Protection Charity Organisation (AEPCO) last year.
AEPCO president Shaikha Marwa bint Abdulrahman Al Khalifa called for the protection of such rare breeds.
“A Bahraini pure Saluki breed, amongst many abandoned in the streets, was rescued a year ago by AEPCO and sent to the UK for adoption,” she told the GDN.
“The dog has now won the first place in a prestigious competition.”
Shaikha Marwa urged authorities to place mandatory chips on this breed to protect it from mistreatment and abuse.
“AEPCO rescues tens of dogs every year which are abandoned after dog races and left to roam the streets of Bahrain,” she said.
