NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has released two aerial images of Bahrain, 35 years apart, showcasing how the kingdom has grown.
The images reveal how the island nation has increased in population and land area, owing to the size of the population which has quadrupled since the early 1980s.
In 2022, the country's inhabitants reached 1.5 million.
The first image is from Thematic Mapper on Landsat 5 on August 17, 1987, while the second one, captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8, shows the country as on August 17, 2022.
The first image was taken soon after the King Fahd Causeway, which links Bahrain to Saudi Arabia, was established in 1986.
NASA noted that most of the change is visible in the northern areas, "where shallow coastal waters have made it technically and economically feasible to build new land from the seafloor.”
