Some residents of social housing apartments in Salman Town say they are facing growing concerns over higher monthly instalments, service and maintenance charges, as well as demands for retrospective payments.
Area MP Jalal Kadhem Al Mahfoodh has called for an urgent review to ensure they do not place unexpected financial pressure on Bahraini families, particularly widows, divorced women, retirees and low-income households.
He said residents had reported being summoned to review their housing situations and update procedures relating to contracts, instalments, services and maintenance.
“What is particularly concerning is that some families are being asked to pay amounts retrospectively, while others are being moved from their original contracts to new arrangements carrying updated financial obligations,” Mr Al Mahfoodh said.
“This has understandably created anxiety among families who believed they had already understood and committed themselves to the terms of their original housing agreements.”
According to cases brought to his attention, some monthly instalments have risen sharply – from around BD20 and BD40 to BD97 and BD125, with some reaching approximately BD166 a month – in addition to charges related to services and maintenance.
“The objective is not to cancel legally due obligations,” the MP added. “What we are demanding is fairness, transparency and a process that does not surprise families with accumulated liabilities or sudden increases that threaten their financial stability.”
Mr Al Mahfoodh said the issue had previously been the subject of parliamentary follow-up by him with the relevant authorities and that he would continue pursuing the latest developments with the Housing and Urban Planning Ministry.
