An employer in Al Ain has been ordered to pay her housemaid Dh70,000 (BD7,000) for assaulting her on multiple occasions and leaving her with various injuries, including broken ribs.
The ruling which was initially handed out by the Court of First Instance was upheld by the Al Ain Appeals Court, Khaleej Times reported.
The housemaid had filed a civil lawsuit against her employer demanding that she pays her Dh100,000 (BD10,000) in compensation for the physical, material and moral damages she suffered as a result of the beatings.
She said that the woman had hit her in the stomach, chest and ribs and other parts of the body, as well as in the face and eyes.
The woman had been convicted and fined Dh2,000 (BD200) by the criminal court earlier after she was found guilty of assault and the court had advised the maid to file a civil lawsuit to claim compensation for her difficulties.
A doctor's forensic report estimated the housemaid's disability at 20pc, confirming fractures to two of her ribs and her backbone.
It also added that the loss of vision in both her eyes was a result of chronic disease that she was suffering from.
