A FEMALE MP who has created a new record by defeating 15 candidates in the first round of National Elections 2022, to retain her seat, is now hoping to push for new legislation that would improve people’s living standards.
Zainab Abdulamir was re-elected with 3,202 votes, which are 50.95pc of the 6,284 valid votes.
A total of 370 votes were declared invalid.
The previous record was held by former deputy speaker Khalil Al Marzooq, who defeated 12 candidates in the first round of the National Elections in 2006.
“I did the impossible, despite the odds being stacked against me,” Ms Abdulamir told the GDN.
“I was confident of a second term, but a landslide victory in the first round was like a dream.
“I believe it was all about genuineness and sincerity as people want MPs to serve them in the best way possible, and I have been doing that since 2018.”
Ms Abdulamir added that a lot more needs to be done over the next four years.
“People are seeking new legislations that would improve their living standards,” said Ms Abdulamir.
“We need to prioritise issues like increasing public sector wages.
“We also have to support employees in the private sector while boosting their allowances, considering that inflation has affected the spending capacity of citizens.
“I am looking forward to more co-operation between MPs as we need to help citizens who have been hit hard by the doubling of Value Added Tax and new pension rules approved by the previous Parliament.”
A candidate must secure at least 50 per cent of votes to be declared a winner.
The second round of elections will be held on Saturday.
