Taking inspiration from Ann L. Mason, a US diplomat who was already using a tuk tuk, three other diplomats, Shareen J. Kitterman, Ruth Holmberg and Jennifer Bywaters have bought personalised tuk tuks.
Mason, a vehicle enthusiast, said that while driving in big armoured vehicles in Pakistan she would always want to be in an autorckshaw similar to those circulating in the streets.
"So, when I got to India and I had the opportunity to buy one, I took it immediately," she said.
Diplomats Kitterman and Holmberg drove pink and black autorickshaws on the streets of New Delhi on Tuesday (November 22) as they moved towards the US Embassy.
According to US diplomat Ruth Holmberg, the vehicle also gives her an opportunity to connect with people.
"I think that diplomacy is not all high level and formal. Diplomacy is people meeting people, people getting to know each other, getting a chance to build relationships and that's what I can do with the auto," said Holmberg.
Earlier, Mexican Ambassador to India, Melba Pria had hired a driver and was using a tuk tuk for personal use.
