Thousands of Iraqis used hashtag #Arabian_Gulf in reaction to Iranian protests over the use of the name “Arabian Gulf” for a regional football competition held in Basra, Iraq.
Basra is hosting the 25th Arabian Gulf Cup through January 19 with the participation of eight Gulf countries.
The hashtag spread like wildfire on social media, in response to what they described as “Iranian provocation,” tweeting that “the Gulf is Arab, not Persian,” as Iranian officials claim. '
Members of the Iranian parliament had denounced the statements by Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Al Sudani, and leader of the Iraqi Sadrist movement, Muqtada Al Sadr, in which they used the term “Arabian Gulf”.
