MORE awareness campaigns have been urged to protect public parks, gardens and walkways in Bahrain from vandalism.
The call came as the Muharraq Municipal Council approved a proposal to instal new games at several parks in the governorate, besides building a walkway in Block 112.
Muharraq Municipality director general Lamya Al Fadhala said vandalism has been witnessed at several parks, gardens and walkways underscoring the need to intensify awareness campaigns to preserve these public facilities.
“It’s unfortunate to see that we spare no effort to provide these services – which are paid for from the state budget – only to become victim to vandalism and destruction,” she said.
“Maybe it’s not deliberate vandalism but misuse, but we need more awareness to protect these assets and we also need to remember that improper use could cause injuries which isn’t something we want to happen.
“These services are for citizens and residents to benefit from and they should be community partners in ensuring their preservation.”
Meanwhile, the council also approved a proposal to build a pedestrian bridge linking Hidd to East Hidd.
The proposal, which was submitted by area councillor Mohammed Al Megahwi, may be completed in collaboration with the private sector to ensure prompt implementation.
“This proposal comes to light to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians – especially students – crossing a key highway between old Hidd and the new East Hidd Housing Town,” said Mr Al Megahwi.
“The town lacks essential services such as schools or shops so people have to cross the Dry Dock Highway into Hidd to avail services, which is dangerous.
“There are more than 30,000 citizens living in East Hidd Housing Town and this pedestrian bridge will ensure their safe movement to get essential services while also connecting both towns.
“The pedestrian bridge will contribute to elevating the infrastructure of East Hidd Housing Town while keeping up with urban developments and investment opportunities.”
Meanwhile, councillors also approved the installation of new lighting in Hidd’s Block 113, the expansion of Road 12 in Hidd, and a request for the development of a branch of Aysha Early Intervention Centre in Hidd after being reviewed by the council’s services and public utilities committee.
Councillors also requested an update on the construction of a fishing port on Al Ghous Coast, the urgent installation of a rainwater drainage system on Road 2205 in Busaiteen, as well as the re-allocation of a property on Block 228 in Busaiteen to develop parking spaces.
The proposals will be referred to Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak for review.
