BAHRAIN will seek to continue their winning streak as they take on Qatar today in their second round match of the 2023 West Asian U-19 Volleyball Championship in Jeddah.
The kingdom’s team won three consecutive games in the preliminary round, defeating Kuwait, the UAE and Syria without losing a set – the only team to have an unblemished record in the championship – to finish as Group A leaders with nine points.
In contrast, Qatar lost all three of their Group B games, going down to Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Lebanon without winning a set.
Still, despite the team’s dominant performance in the competition so far, Bahrain’s head of delegation said that they would not take Qatar lightly.
“We are preparing for this encounter in the same way as we did for our earlier matches,” Salah Janahi told the GDN by phone from Jeddah.
“We sat with our technical staff to analyse the Qatar team, to study their strengths and weaknesses – just as we did for the other sides.
“And we shall have a training session in the morning before the game so that our players are as fit and match-ready as they can be.”
Janahi added that he hoped his team would perform even better than it did in the preliminary round.
“Of course, we are hoping to win,” he added.
“But this is a new team, a young team and we tried to utilise all our players, to give them all some match experience, in our previous matches.
“Every player in our side has his own specific role in the team, as the technical staff have directed. And we always tell our players to start strong, to make less mistakes, to retain confidence in our style of play.”
That would remain Bahrain’s strategy against Qatar, Janahi explained.
“Our strategy worked very well in the preliminary round,” he said.
“And we shall seek to replicate it against Qatar because it has been the key to our success.”
