A NEW public park could be built in a recently-urbanised residential block in Malkiya to provide space for residents moving there to enjoy fresh air in comfort and style.
There has been a huge demand for properties in Block 1032 with scores of families moving to the area over the past five years.
The frontline of the residential block is already seeing businesses opening there too and many more are likely to follow.
Northern Governorate constituency 12 (Saddad, Shahrakan, Malkiya, Karzakan and parts of Demistan and Luzi) councillor Zainab Al Durazi presented details on the proposal at the Northern Municipal Council meeting held at its headquarters in Budaiya.
She believes a 3,124.529sqm plot registered for recreational purposes under the government would make for the perfect spot for a park.
“It is a new area that people have just started moving to,” said Ms Al Durazi. “The plot I suggest is surrounded by private residences, locations for special projects, public services and facilities,” she added.
“In my opinion it would be a perfect place for a park giving residents a place to relax and breathe fresh air.”
She added that it could give designers an ideal opportunity to be innovative, groundbreaking and environmentally friendly.
“The park could be fully powered by solar energy and feature other modern technologies, with budget and time frames being announced for work to start.”
The government recently at a cost of more than BD1 million provided access roads, drainage, ducts and layering work in the area.
Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak will now review the park proposal.
Meanwhile, Works Minister Ibrahim Al Hawaj approved a proposal to erect a ‘banoosh’ monument, a traditional boat, on the roundabout between Malkiya and Karzkan submitted by the council following another proposal by Ms Al Durazi last month.
He has asked for designs to be presented to the ministry to ensure it follows set safety standards and conditions.
The GDN has earlier reported that the council voted to ban development on the 25-km west coast stretch from Hamala to Malkiya. Only Malkiya has a registered coastline, while all other areas remain private properties that extend into the sea.
