FIFTY saplings were planted during an event at a community centre in Isa Town as part of the second phase of an initiative aimed at spreading a culture of community and environmental awareness.
The saplings were planted at the Dar Al Manar Association as part of the ‘Sowaed’ initiative, which is being led by the Southern Municipality, in the presence of officials including the centre’s board of directors chairman Adnan Almaliki, director Moza Nass and Southern Municipal Council members Abdulla Daraj and Mubarak Faraj.
During the event, a number of senior citizens participated in planting a number of trees, including poinciana, neem, washingtonia, eucalyptus and jambu, in the centre’s garden.
Gifts were distributed and participants were honoured for their hard work.
The campaign was launched in 2019 by the Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry in co-operation with the municipalities and municipal councils.
A number of activities held as part of the initiative include planting saplings, distributing seedlings, afforestation activities in public spaces and clean-up campaigns in coasts, walkway, gardens and parks.
The campaign will continue throughout the year as part of efforts to enhance environmental and urban awareness in the community.
