HANDBALL – BAHRAIN’S youth national handball team are gearing up to take part in the 10th Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship, which will be taking place in Amman, Jordan, starting early next month.
The Bahrainis are one of 13 under-19 squads from across the continent set to take part in the event, organised by the Asian Handball Federation (AHF).
It is scheduled to be held from September 3 to 14, and it will be a qualifying event for the 11th IHF Men’s Youth U19 World Championship, set to be held in Slovenia next year. The top five teams from the competition will secure their spots in the worlds.
Bahrain have been drawn in Group C for the competition’s preliminary round. They are alongside defending champions South Korea and Chinese Taipei. Group A features Iran, Iraq, and India; Group B is composed of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE; and Group D includes Japan, Kuwait, China, and hosts Jordan.
The top two from each group will move on to the main round, while the other squads will compete for the Martyr Fahad Al Ahmad Al Sabah Cup in the consolation bracket.
That will then set the stage for the semi-finals, scheduled for September 12, and then the gold and bronze medal games will be held on the tournament’s final day.
The event was previously scheduled to be held in Shiraz, Iran, but was moved recently to Amman, the AHF had announced.
South Korea have accumulated a total of seven medals in the competition’s nine editions, including three gold, one silver, and three bronze medals. Similarly, Qatar and Japan have each secured a total of five medals.
