Work on three major infrastructure projects to develop rainwater drainage networks and roads in the Southern Governorate are underway.
Works Ministry Under-Secretary Shaikh Mishaal Al Khalifa said the schemes, being implemented in Al Hajiyat Road, Mahzoora Avenue and Avenue 37 in Riffa, aim to streamline traffic.
“Upgrading the rainwater drainage network will also enhance infrastructure and ensure their sustainability,” he said.
“The projects include rebuilding roads and improving lighting at night to boost safety for road users.”

New roads being paved
The first project aims to expand the number of lanes on Mahzoora Avenue from two to three, starting from Road 3933 to Umm Al Naasan Avenue. Upon completion, the road will be able to accommodate 4,800 vehicles per hour, up from the current 3,200.
The second scheme will focus on expansion of road from Mahzoora Avenue to the intersection with Avenue 37. A third lane will be added on Mahzoora Avenue, for about 970 metres, leading to the intersection between National Charter Road and Road 3933.
Additionally, the intersection between Road 3710 and Road 3701 will also be developed to include a rainwater drainage network and a pavement for pedestrians.
The third project will develop Al Hajiyat Road and the roundabout that connects to Jeddah Road. The streets will be revamped and a new roundabout will be constructed, which will increase the road’s vehicle capacity from about 800 to 1,500 cars per hour.
Speed bumps, signs and guides aimed at protecting drivers and pedestrians will also be installed.
