WRESTLING – BAHRAIN’S Olympic and world champion Akhmed Tazhudinov is expected to be out of competition for at least six months as he recovers from season-ending shoulder surgery, with which he competed at Paris 2024.
A high-ranking Bahrain Wrestling Federation official told the GDN that Tazhudinov underwent successful acromioclavicular (AC) joint reconstruction for a high-grade AC joint injury, which he suffered during his preparations for the recently concluded Olympics.
Tazhudinov was able to compete at the Games hurt, but still managed to capture the men’s 97kg freestyle wrestling gold. After returning to the kingdom from the French capital, it was decided for the 21-year-old to do the necessary procedure, which he had last week in Zurich, Switzerland.
“He will be doing the recovery process now with rehabilitation and physiotherapy,” the official told GDN. “We expect him back to wrestling in six to nine months, and back to training in approximately four months after surgery.”
The AC joint in the shoulder is where two bones meet.
Tazhudinov travelled to Zurich accompanied by Bahrain officials. Following his surgery, he posted a picture on social media of himself from his hospital bed with a sling supporting his right shoulder.
Tazhudinov’s Paris Olympics title has added to the gold medal he won at last year’s world championships in Belgrade, Serbia. He has also claimed gold medals in back-to-back Asian championships, held earlier this year in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and last year in Astana, Kazakhstan, while also capturing gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023 in China.
