'Brainrot' also written like 'Brain rot' was officially announced Oxford Word of The Year for 2024 after a public vote with more than 37,000 people voting for it.
The word 'Brainrot' is now officially defined in the Oxford dictionary as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterized as likely to lead to such deterioration”.
The word gathered much traction online especially on social media, particularly on Tiktok among Gen Z and Gen Alpha circles and is now seeing use in mainstream journalistic content, mostly to decry the negative impacts of the overconsumption of online content.
The shortlist was created when after much deliberation and research through conversation and gathering language data, then through a two week public vote and more conversation the language experts declare the definitive word of the year.
The six word shortlist for Oxford's Word of the Year included: 'Demure', 'Slop', 'Lore', 'Romantasy' and 'Dynamic Pricing' with last year's winner being 'Rizz'.
