A call to extend the dates of popular events held under the ‘Bahrain Festivities’ banner to January 31 were voiced by MPs ... so they can be enjoyed by the many people who were otherwise engaged elsewhere.
An urgent proposal, spearheaded by five MPs led by the legislative and legal affairs committee vice-chairman Ali Al Dossary, was unanimously approved during yesterday’s parliamentary session and referred to the Cabinet for immediate consideration.
The MPs highlighted that many residents and visitors missed the opportunity to attend the events due to overlapping commitments during the festive season and the Gulf Cup football extravaganza and final won by Bahrain in Kuwait.
It specifically calls for the resumption of Manama Retro, which ended last night, the Heritage Village, which closed on Sunday, and the Muharraq Nights Festival, which concluded last week.
“These events were a huge success, attracting thousands of people from across Bahrain and abroad,” said Mr Al Dossary. “However, many people could not attend because they were either travelling for Christmas and New Year, supporting the national football team, or busy with exams in government schools, which will not finish until January 15.

“Participants in some of these popular community events may not have started fully packing away yet, so there is a chance to continue.”
He stressed the cultural and economic importance of these initiatives, noting that they not only celebrate Bahrain’s rich heritage and modern vibrancy but also contribute significantly to the local economy by boosting tourism and encouraging spending.
“Extending these festivities would provide an opportunity for those who missed out to experience and enjoy them, while also generating further economic benefits for local businesses,” explained Mr Al Dossary. “Manama Retro and the Muharraq Nights Festival were unique and vibrant celebrations.
“It’s a shame they ended so soon. Extending them would give everyone a chance to experience the fun. The overlap with examinations made it difficult for many families with school-aged children to fully participate in the activities.”
MPs remain optimistic about the proposal’s approval.

The third edition of the month-long Muharraq Nights festival ended on December 30. It transformed the historic city into a vibrant cultural and tourist destination, blending heritage with modernity
“We hope the government sees the value in extending these festivities,” added Mr Al Dossary. “This is a chance to further enhance Bahrain’s reputation as a destination for cultural and family-friendly events.
“The call for an extension is part of broader efforts to support Bahrain’s tourism sector, aligning with the government’s goals to diversify the economy and promote the kingdom as a regional hub for culture and entertainment.
“If approved, the move is expected to attract even larger crowds, providing a perfect finale to Bahrain’s winter festivities season.”
Meanwhile, MPs approved an urgent proposal to issue a statement on the 25th anniversary of the National Guard and deputised Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam to issue it on their behalf.
The statement on the occasion was later issued.
