The Bahrain-based US Fifth Fleet has been recognised with a top military award for its operation targeting smuggling networks around the Arabian Gulf.
US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro recently bestowed the Navy Expeditionary Medal to the US Fifth Fleet for its ‘exceptional leadership and achievements’ as part of Operation Unified Takedown, from October 2021 to September last year.
“The sailors and marines of US Fifth Fleet have set an extraordinary standard of excellence and perseverance,” said Secretary Del Toro.
“Their success in Operation Unified Takedown has not only enhanced maritime security but also strengthened global partnerships and fostered long-term regional stability.”
Operation Unified Takedown was aimed at disrupting smuggling networks that funded extremism and contributed to the global circulation of illegal substances.
During the counter-smuggling operation, more than 70 tonnes of explosive propellant, 1,400 weapons, 226,000 rounds of ammunition and 43,000kg of narcotics were seized.
“This recognition reflects the relentless commitment, courage and professionalism of our Sailors and Marines,” US Fifth Fleet commander Vice Admiral George Wikoff noted.
“Operation Unified Takedown has been a team effort, and our success would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our coalition partners and the dedication of every individual involved.”
According to the Fifth Fleet, the operation significantly disrupted terrorist supply chains, bolstered regional stability and curbed the global impact of illicit trafficking.
Established in 1936, the Navy Expeditionary Medal is awarded to Navy officers who were ‘confirmed to have landed on foreign territory and engaged in operations against armed opposition, or operated under circumstances which, after full consideration, shall be deemed to merit special recognition and for which service no campaign medal has been awarded.’
This award to the Fifth Fleet recognises its innovative use of resources, including advanced unmanned systems, robust intelligence sharing and seamless integration with coalition forces.
“This operation showcases how innovation and collaboration can drive success in addressing complex maritime challenges,” added Secretary Del Toro. “The men and women of COMFIFTHFLT (Commander, Fifth Fleet) exemplify the Navy’s commitment to protecting our national interests and those of our allies.”
This announcement follows Secretary Del Toro’s recent visit to Bahrain in December last year.
The GDN reported that during the visit, Deputy King His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa met Secretary Del Toro at Sakhir Palace. And, at the Naval Support Activity (NSA) facility in Juffair, Secretary Del Toro met key leaders, service members and government civilians, visited various facilities and ships and held an all-hands call in the base gym.
Mr Del Toro was sworn in as the 78th secretary of the US Navy in 2021.
The US Fifth Fleet area of operations encompasses approximately 6.5 million sqkm of water space and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, parts of the Indian Ocean and three critical choke points at the Strait of Hormuz, Suez Canal and Strait of Bab Al Mandeb.
