ATHLETICS – Shafeeq Saleh and Giulia Zanotti were the overall winners in their respective categories yesterday in the Beyon Full Marathon, organised by the Bahrain Road Runners (BRR).
More than 500 participants took on the 42.2-kilometre distance of the race, which started at the western gate of Al Areen Wildlife Park, passed through Zallaq village, Gulf of Bahrain Avenue, and Al Jazayer Beach on the Nasser bin Hamad Cycling Track, before returning to the starting point.
Saleh finished first overall amongst the men after completing the race distance in two hours 32 minutes 29 seconds.
He enjoyed a comfortable lead ahead of overall runner-up Ahmed Almutawa, who had a time of 2:48:07, while Sauood Al Hassan came third in 2:49:55.
On the distaff, Zanotti claimed her victory in a total race time of 3:53:01. Vanessa Williams was a close second in 3:53:30, while Leanne Black joined them on the podium in 4:03:23.
Amongst the winners in the various age categories of individual men, Joe Mitchell triumphed in the 16 to 24 class in 2:56:34, Mohamed Alshaer won the 25 to 29 in 3:17:17, Mohammed Altairi won the 30 to 34 in 2:56:52, Abdo Masoud Mohammed won the 35 to 39 in 2:53:02, Hassan Nooraldeen won the 40 to 44 in 3:25:17, Shaikh Sager Al Khalifa won the 45 to 49 in 3:36:18, Alexander Scherz won the 50 to 54 in 3:22:02, Sandesh Nagvekar won the 55 to 59 in 4:03:37, Michael Goode won the 60 to 64 in 4:41:25, and Robert Wakefield claimed the 65 to 69 in 4:54:46.
The age-category winners amongst the women were Yasmin Al Mashouk in the 25 to 29 class in 4:12:04, Julie Ann Pasadas in the 30 to 34 in 4:29:17, Danicarsalome Fuller in the 35 to 39 in 4:41:16, Sawsun Asaad in the 40 to 44 in 4:27:26, Danielle de Jager in the 45 to 49 in 4:34:27, Minnie Rademaker in the 50 to 54 in 4:56:55, and Parvin Djahani in the 60 to 64 in 4:55:18.
Meanwhile, amongst the teams, GPIC were in first place overall and also took the win amongst the corporate category competitors in 2:55:36. Multaqaa Sports Two were second overall and first amongst the men’s teams in 2:57:50, while Bahrain Wheelchair were third and winners of the wheelchair class in 3:05:25.
Bahrain Polytechnic Two were the top women’s team in 4:26:12, while Happy Team Mix were best amongst the mixed squads in 3:07:31. Special Needs One were first amongst Special Olympic squads in 3:53:29, completing the list of winners.
At the end of the race, the winners were presented their respective trophies and medals in an awarding ceremony attended by BRR officials.
