More than 200 traders have pledged to keep prices stable during Ramadan this year, according to Bahrain Chamber officials.
People in Bahrain were also assured there were sufficient stocks of essential food items, with hypermarkets and retail stores offering special promotions and discounts ahead of the Holy Month, which is expected to start in the coming weeks.
“There is enough supply of food products, including popular items, for Ramadan,” Bahrain Chamber’s Food Sector Committee chairman Khalid Al Amin told the GDN yesterday.
“Many commercial establishments have already started offering discounts and promotions to attract customers and make the upcoming month as easy as possible for them.”
He was speaking on the sidelines of the annual food traders Ramadan preparation virtual meeting which was held yesterday and attended by representatives and heads of hypermarkets and stores.
Mr Al Amin added that as in previous years more than 200 merchants have pledged to keep prices stable during Ramadan this year.
“A total of 212 merchants have signed and vowed not to increase the price of products during Ramadan,” he said.
“Our daily import of different food items is about 500 tonnes.
“We import from different markets, including Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and Türkiye, to ensure ample supply of fruit, vegetables, poultry and meat.
“However, it is our sincere request to consumers not to hoard food or other items and purchase them daily from 7,000 supermarkets and retail stores or 20 different delivery service companies.”
Mr Al Amin said the price of chicken and meat will remain unchanged, with several brands available in the market to meet the growing demand.
He also added they continue to co-operate with relevant government entities to conduct market inspections against manipulating prices of products due to the expected high demand during the Holy Month when families gather together to break their fast.
“Inspections will continue against any fraudulent practices and we urge consumers to report any anomaly in prices or suspicious behaviour.”
Also attending the virtual meeting yesterday was LuLu Group International director Juzer Rupawala who said: “We have launched our Ramadan campaign and are well stocked to meet the consumer demand by offering various promotions.
“Customers will be happy with the special discounts on Ramadan essentials and we look forward to welcoming them or shopping online.”
