A four-month-long programme to train officials on all aspects of legal protection of sea life and the marine environment was launched by the Public Prosecution yesterday.
The multifaceted programme aims to unify the efforts of the various official bodies tasked with combating crimes related to marine wealth and maximise efficiency and co-ordination.
Officials from the Interior Ministry, Supreme Council for Environment, the Judicial and Legal Studies Institute (JLSI) and Public Prosecution are participating in the training.
“Sea life and the marine environment are part of our national heritage, a central pillar of the nation’s development and future,” Attorney General Dr Ali Al Buainain said in a speech.
“His Majesty King Hamad has set a vision that directs us to maintain and grow the variety of marine wealth, ensure food security and face challenges and exploitation of the environment.
“These public bodies share the responsibility to protect marine life, and have a duty to collaborate as much as possible.
“Over four months, the programme will allow speakers and participants alike to explore the subject from all angles and come up with methods to raise performance and strengthen environmental protection.”
Among the topics that will be covered are the legal responsibilities of seafarers, ways to detect violations to marine law, judicial procedures once a crime is observed, how to handle evidence and more.
The programme was inaugurated in the presence Supreme Judicial Council vice chairman and Cassation Court president Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa.
